The Dr. Greg Seftick Wilderness Scholarship Fund

Greg Photo 1.jpg

The Dr. Greg Seftick Wilderness Scholarship was established in 2013 in loving memory of Greg Seftick. Greg was a 1998 graduate of Stillwater High School; he competed on the Alpine Ski Teams at Stillwater High School and at St. Olaf College. During these formative years, Greg developed his skills and became a passionate backcountry skier; he loved the mountains and the wilderness. Greg died in an avalanche in Grand Teton National Park on April 16, 2011. His family and friends established this endowed scholarship fund to forever honor his memory and support graduating Stillwater High School students with a similar passion for alpine skiing and love of the outdoors.

In Memoriam

10th Anniversary

Written by Dan Seftick, Greg's father

On the night of April 16, 2011, our son, Greg, and his friend, Walker Kuhl, died in an avalanche in Garnet Canyon in Grand Teton National Park. To honor this 10th anniversary and our son's legacy, we invite you to donate to The Dr. Greg Seftick Wilderness Scholarship Fund so that we may increase the amount of annual scholarships awarded.

In addition, every year on the anniversary of his death we invite family and friends to light candles at sunset to signify that Greg’s light continues to shine in our world. The tradition has grown and now people unknown to us, some who have also buried a child, participate. We are deeply moved when we hear from others who join with us, either to celebrate and remember Greg, or to begin their own tradition in memory of a child. Over the years candles have been lit on every continent. We are honored by your participation as we continue to work to preserve and build Greg’s legacy.

In 2016, Real Mountains, the story of Greg’s life and death, and the story of a father’s grief, was published. All proceeds from the sale of this memoir are distributed among four nonprofit partners, one of which is the St. Croix Valley Foundation.  For more information about these legacy building activities or to request a copy of Real Mountains please visit the website.
