Background
The Music Education Valley Impact Fund at SCVF was established by Nyda Swanson in 2002. The widow of Earl Swanson, former CEO of Andersen Corporation, wanted to forever support the cause closest to her heart – music. SCVF helped Nyda establish an endowed fund that provides annual grants for music education; because the fund was established as an endowed fund, it will award grants to schools in the region forever. A panel of volunteer committee members will select grant recipients, providing funds to schools with the most effective programming - placing grant dollars in the most capable hands at the right time, in perpetuity.
Since the first Music Education Grants were awarded in 2003, SCVF has awarded 274 such grants totaling more than $655,000. Schools have used Music Education Grants to purchase instruments, sheet music, new compositions, hire clinicians, purchase technology, and provide joint school concerts.
"So many requests are innovative, while others hope to replace aging instruments that can't be repaired," said Kris Tjornehoj, chair of SCVF's Music Education Grant panel. "We want to support music teachers seeking to strengthen or improve their programs. Receiving an SCVF Music Education Grant recognizes the commitment of that teacher and school to improve their program. We hope these grants help inspire both teachers and students to pursue a lifelong love of music."
